Sump pumps can be very valuable in elliminating water under the level of the floor. This in turn gives any water on top of that stage a place to go and will get it off the floor. If your residence is not constructed on the crest of a knoll, or has direct down hill flow to a storm sewer, it probably already has a sump pump. You may not notice it, as they typically only make noise when they are running after a heavy rain. If you are near it, you can hear it, otherwise it is just a enclosed hole in the basement flooring, about the dimension of a large refuse container.
