What You Need to Know About Carpet Installation

Installing a new floor comes with many considerations. First, you need to decide what kind of floor you want to install. Are you going to do-it-yourself or hire a floor contractor? And, of course, the floor price is a big factor in determining what you ultimately decide on. If you have decided on carpet for your floor install, you can then begin the process of selecting the color, pattern, texture and style you prefer. Here are a few ideas you may want to think about.

In your floor install plan for carpeting, you need to first get padding. Padding comes in many different thicknesses and what you choose will determine how soft the feeling of the carpeting will be under your feet. For high traffic areas like living rooms and family rooms, you want something that is going to be more durable, and can handle the large amount of foot traffic that it will most likely get. A floor contractor can advise you on what the best options are depending on the room you are going to carpet. The same principle applies to your carpet selection. Carpeting can come in more commercial or industrial strengths that does not have a lot of cushion to it (usually used for dens and finished basements) or you have the option of getting something super plush and thick (best for bedrooms or any low foot-traffic rooms). Again, the floor contractor will help you determine which carpet suits your purposes. Just remember that the floor price will increase with better quality carpet and padding.

After selecting the padding and carpet style, you will have to decide on a color. The options are almost endless. You can stick with a regular flat color, one with a hint of sheen, such as a marbleized or textured look, or get creative using color carpet tiles to form a pattern or picture. However, the more complicated the pattern is, the more difficult the project will be especially if you are doing the floor install yourself.

When selecting your carpet, you will notice that the floor price runs the gamut, so make sure you have a budget and stick to it. Do not get overwhelmed if you see something you like that is out of your price range. Ultimately, things will come up during the floor install that you may have to pay extra for, and if you spend too much at the onset with the carpet and padding selection, you may not have enough to accommodate last minute issues or problems that can arise.

All in all, a floor install does not have to be complicated and the floor price doesn't have to be outrageous. If you hire a floor contractor, a lot of the work will be done for you. But if you do decide to take this type of project on yourself, you may want to do some research first to have a general understanding of what is involved when you install carpeting.
