Hi, my name is Steve Sleeper and I'm a Deacon at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, Omaha. We're a Confessional Lutheran Church Omaha and our Pastor is Phillip Houser. I asked Pastor Houser what it means to be a Confessional Lutheran Church.
[Pastor Houser] “To be a Confessional Lutheran Church means to make the good confession. Peter, contained in the Gospels, made the good confession when he said, ‘You are the Christ, the son of the living God.’ That's a very brief summation of the Christian faith. There's a lot more that needs to be said of course and much more that is said in the Holy Scripture but finally, to make the good confession, which is to say to be confessional, you are going to be faithful to what we now have had revealed to us in the scriptures that others have confessed.
“The 66 books of the Bible are all written by men that have made that good confession of the truth. It comes from God. And we read it and study it, we gain knowledge of it, we hopefully know it, and then we proclaim it, we confess it. In the form of Sermons and by God's grace, faithful Sermons, and not only my ideas about what should be or is or whatever.
“But from a wider sense; our whole congregation and Church body. In conclusion, hopefully the whole Christian church confessing the truth of who Jesus is, of what God has done for us through Christ, of what he continues to accomplish and the hope we have.
“This is the hope around the globe, of course. And thus we make that good confession. To be a Confessional Lutheran Church is to cling to the truth as we have had it delivered to us from the prophets and apostles within the Old and New Testaments.”
[Steve Sleeper] “Okay. So, that is what it means to be a Confessional Lutheran Church Omaha. Pastor Houser, - or call 402.934.9045. the Lutheran Confessions?”
[Pastor Houser] “The Lutheran Confessions are a group of texts that dates from the Reformation period where the reformers stated the faith as they believed the scriptures educated them. The foundational article of The Lutheran Confessions is the Augsburg Confession. This is a confession of the faith in 28 articles that deals with 20 diverse issues wherein Lutheran reformers said, ‘Okay, on this unique subject that is what we believe.’ All of these 28 articles have got to do with diverse topics. We, as Lutheran Christians, have read the scriptures and then we have, by extension, read the Lutheran Confessions - including the Augsburg Confession. We accept as true those books within the Lutheran confessions teach the truth. We accept as true they are correct in retelling what the scriptures have to state and thus we confess them. We subscribe to them. Or in another words, we basically say Amen to them.
“The Lutheran Confessions aren't Holy Scripture. The Holy Scriptures are the only real rule of norm of faith and life. We get the truth from God from and through the Holy Scriptures alone, but the Lutheran Confessions rightly retell what we see in scripture.”
