Of all of the touchy subjects in the US they definitely include the right to own guns. U.S citizens have had the legal right to own and bear arms since the founding of this country. If you would like to stir up a genuine hornet's nest, then just threaten to get rid of the gun ownership right and you will find out how many Americans there are that will fight doggedly to retain it. They claim they have very good reasons to own firearms and believe the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States guarantees them they can exercise that right without question.

Some lawmakers appear to translate the Second Amendment a little differently than the regular U.S. citizen. Many lawmakers say that the amendment is referring to military groups like the National Guard when it is speaking of the men and women and gun rights, but you won't convince determined gun owners of this. Since the Second Amendment clearly states the right of the individuals to keep and bear arms, most people think that it ought to be interpreted exactly as it is written. Many Americans that firmly believe in their constitutional right to have firearms also worry that if this right is taken from them that other liberties that are guaranteed in the Constitution could also be put into jeopardy.

When you take into consideration the truth about the crime rate in the US likened to various countries, you can understand why so many Americans feel they are safer when they can own their own guns. Almost any criminal that wants a gun can get one and they do not buy them legally for the most part. Average citizens think that since they have to live scared of being a victim of any sum of violent criminal offenses, they stand a better opportunity of night-time the odds if they too have a gun. Many American citizens have been able to save their own lives when put into a perilous deadly situation because they were prepared to defend themselves and their family with a weapon of their own.

One the other side of the debate, some lawmakers and some citizens believe that the more guns that are removed from our social system the safer everyone will be. Most people can see the good sense in this argument if there were a means to also ensure that criminals would not still be able to get their guns illegally. Gun owners by and large don't feel that there is something that can prevent violent offenders from getting their guns illegally and they think that an injustice would be done to them if they could not also own their guns.

The gun ownership debate has been going on for quite a while now and no there is no end in sight. It is not likely that either side is going to throw in the towel. Despite which side of the argument you fall into, some thought really ought to be provided to having a Constitutional right reinterpreted and taken away. It very well could set a trend towards other rights being questioned and reinterpreted as well and that could be the beginning of the unraveling of the US Constitution according to those individuals that the Constitution should never be redefined in any way.
