Be it a hobbyist or a businessman, when lifting huge things, you will find lifting equipment necessary. For example, a great piece of lifting equipment and relatively cheap are webbing slings. So, if you decide needs one you will have to find a quality supplier. but if you just walk into any old a store and ask for it then expect the reply, "Which one, sir?" As there are a lot of types to choose from. So which one, indeed?
In selecting a sling, a customer should consider a few different things, the most important being the weight of the object to be lifted and the place in which the sling will be used. The good news is that webbing slings have different specifications for this which make it easier compare product types.
So, now the user is looking at a reference chart. How should he choose? Well, the workplace should be carefully considered. Hobbyists, like those who need to lift their extreme sports vehicles, only need to consider slings which would be ideal for outdoors - exposure to sunlight and other weather elements are some examples of things to remember. On the other hand, businessmen who need slings for industrial purposes have to take this matter more seriously. The state of the working environment should be closely examined. What types of chemicals are present? Are the temperatures extreme?
The material which composes the sling is the number one concern. For example, different materials will resist damage from different kinds of chemicals. If the working environment deals with acidic chemicals, polyester webbing slings are ideal. Polyester can resist damage from acids but is weakened by alkalis. On the contrary, webbing slings made of nylon are resistant to alkali damage but not acids. Another example is polypropylene webbing which is resistant to both alkali and acid damage but can be weakened by other chemicals such as certain tars, solvents and paints. Different materials will also have different temperature tolerance. In the case on nylon and polyester slings, they should not be in contact with anything higher than 194 degrees Fahrenheit and lower than -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Through knowing this, the customer would be able to choose the material that could last the longest and therefore be the safest.
Next, the customer should look at what is going to be loaded. The weight of the object is one of the most important factors. Slings have a property called lifting capacity. This is the range of weight that the sling can carry. For example, the lifting capacity of certain polyester webbing is 1 to 60 tons. The shape of the load is also important because this determines the weight distribution of the load. It is a good practice to have a sling where the weight of the load is distributed fairly equal throughout the sling. This helps to avoid unbalanced strain on a certain part of the webbing which may lead to severe consequences. Some examples of webbing types for different shapes are choker, two-leg bridle, basket hitch, and single-leg vertical.
If the customer is still not sure what to choose or finds a tough decision between appropriate slings, manufacturers or other experts can be consulted.
After the sling has been chosen, proper usage and maintenance should be practiced so the sling will last its longest. Also, inspections can let the user know when to replace their webbing slings.
